‘On the Yard’: Westbury HS College Go Center helps students navigate college-application process

During this month’s episode of On the Yard, HISD Board President Wanda Adams sits down with Westbury High School Principal Susan Monaghan and the staff of the school’s College Go Center.

The Go Center allows students at the school – many of whom are first-generation college applicants – to access the information they need on where and when to apply, financial aid, housing options, and more.

“We walk them through every step of the process,” said College Access Coordinator Laura Dew. “They really rely on us to help them every step of the way.”

Monaghan said it’s a priority as soon as freshmen step foot on the Westbury campus to get them to begin thinking about college. And part of that effort is utilizing a variety of voices to emphasize that message.

“We have our seniors start talking to our freshmen about ‘what I wish I would have done,’” Monaghan said. “So we’re now looking at not just the voices of the people sitting around this table, but we’re looking at the voices of students to talk to the younger generation.”

Listen to the entire interview in the video above. On the Yard with Wanda Adams will broadcast on HISD TV (Comcast, Ch. 18 and AT&T U-Verse, Ch. 99) every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday evenings at 8:30 p.m.
