Transportation Services is continuing its efforts to address the district’s bus driver shortage with a job fair next week.
The job fair will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wed., Feb. 20 at the HISD Construction Services Facility (3200 Center St., 77007)
The department, like other school districts and municipalities, is working to address a critical bus driver shortage and is currently seeking to add 75 more drivers to its current roster.
Transportation Services General Manager John Wilcots IV said the need for more drivers is urgent as the department focuses on sustaining more efficient operations.
“We are looking for drivers with not only the technical skills, but also the dedication to move our students safely to and from school,” Wilcots said. “Making sure we have enough drivers to cover all routes and fill in during emergencies is essential to ensuring our department is running safely and on time.”
All applicants must be at least 18-years-old with a valid Texas driver’s license and a motor vehicle report with less than six points. They are asked to bring their social security card and employment authorization card, if applicable. They must also be able to pass a background investigation, drug and alcohol screening, and a Department of Transportation physical. Applicants must also be able to communicate in English, both orally and in writing.
According to Wilcots, applications filled out at the job fair will be reviewed by Transportation and Human Resources staff, and interviews will be conducted onsite. Candidates who meet job requirements and pass the mandatory screenings will be extended offers onsite.
Drivers earn a starting hourly wage of $16.65 and will receive free CDL training. Other benefits include health, dental and vision insurance, Teacher Retirement System participation, and special trip pay options.
