Transportation Services is continuing its recruiting efforts as the school year comes to an end, with the department hosting four job fairs this summer to hire new bus drivers.  

The district has been working this past year to address a bus driver shortage by adding more drivers to its roster. The job fairs will continue through June and July. 

“We want people who are reliable and hardworking,” Transportation Services General Manager John Wilcots IV said. “My goal is to have one bus driver for every route as we head into next year.”  

The job fairs will take place from 9 a.m. to noon. Dates and locations are listed below. 

•  June 15 – Shadydale Elementary School, 5905 Tidwell Road, Houston, TX 77016 
• June 27 – Northwest Motor Pool, 6351 Pinemont Drive, Houston, TX 77092 
• July 13 – Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center, 4400 W. 18th Street, Houston, TX 77092 
• July 31 – Northwest Motor Pool, 6351 Pinemont Drive, Houston, TX 77092 

All applicants must be at least 18 years old with a valid Texas driver’s license and a motor vehicle report with less than six points. Candidates must bring their social security card and employment authorization card, if applicable. They must also be able to pass a background investigation, drug and alcohol screening, and a Department of Transportation physical. Applicants must also be able to communicate in English, both orally and in writing. 

Applications filled out at the job fair will be reviewed by Transportation and Human Resources staff, and interviews will be conducted on site. Candidates who meet job requirements and pass the mandatory screenings will be extended offers on site. 

Drivers will earn a starting hourly wage of $16.65 and will receive free CDL training. Other benefits include health, dental and vision insurance, Teacher Retirement System participation, and special trip pay options.
