A trio of high schools in Houston Independent School District are being recognized by the College Board.
Bellaire High School, North Houston Early College High School, and Young Women’s College Preparatory Academy are each being honored with the prestigious 2020 AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award. Only 1,119 schools in the country obtained this honor.
To receive the award, each school met at least one of two criteria: either 50% or higher female representation in one or both AP computer science courses exams, or a percentage of female computer science examinees that meets or exceeds that of the school’s female population.
The award seeks out schools that work toward equal gender representation in computer science courses. Bellaire, North Houston ECHS, and YWCPA have all expanded young women’s access to computer science courses and have taken steps to ensure gender parity.
