HISD is currently reviewing new health and physical education instructional materials for grades K–12 as part of the Texas Education Association’s (TEA) Proclamation 2022 review and adoption process. Materials recommended by the district and adopted by the HISD Board of Education will be available for use in schools starting in fall 2022.
HISD invites members of the public to submit feedback on the materials under consideration via a district survey at https://bit.ly/P22-survey.
Access to the materials for public review is provided in the links section of the Proclamation 2022 – Health and Physical Education page: https://www.houstonisd.org/Page/172459
The district survey is open through Dec. 31, 2021.
The district reviews proposed instructional materials for alignment to state instructional standards, quality, accuracy, balance, support for all student groups, fit with district programs, and adherence to state and local requirements. A group of highly effective health and physical education teachers nominated by their principals is currently evaluating each publisher’s program according to a standard rubric. Their reviews, along with input from campuses, parents and community members, the district’s School Health Advisory Council, and district departments, will inform the final recommendations to be presented to the board in spring 2022 for their consideration.
The TEA maintains a full set of resources regarding the new health and physical education adoption on its Proclamation 2022 web page: https://tea.texas.gov/academics/instructional-materials/review-and-adoption-process/proclamation-2022
The last state adoption of health textbooks was in 2004.
