Big dreams start here; pre-kindergarten applications now open for the 2022-2023 school year

As a parent or caregiver, you want nothing more than for your child to be safe, successful, and happy.

Backed by research in early education, beginning school in pre-kindergarten gives children those exact lifelong advantages.

“Pre-K benefits Vanity by preparing her for a seat at any table she chooses,” said pre-K parent Vivian McKelbey-Bass. “As a pre-K scholar, Vanity has learned how to apply academics to daily scenarios such as grocery shopping, identifying, and reading traffic signs, gardening, cleaning, and cooking. In addition to what she has learned, she has improved in communication, organization, social engagement, accountability, philanthropy, and leadership. It feels great as a parent to know that Vanity will enter kindergarten with confidence, ready to engage and succeed.”

Children in pre-kindergarten spend time learning the letter names and sounds, making friends, listening, and following directions, writing their names, reading stories, and so much more.

HISD’s full-day pre-kindergarten programs offer structure, social development, preparation for elementary school, and a strong academic foundation.

“It is crucial for our youngest learners to attend pre-kindergarten so that they acquire the skills necessary to be successful in future grades such as oral language development, social and emotional skills, early reading and writing skills, math and science skills, and much more,” said Early Childhood Director Marisol Castruita. “Pre-kindergarten is also where children develop a love for learning.”

HISD has invested in hundreds of unique early learning options The district has eight early childhood centers and 158 elementary schools that offer full-day pre-kindergarten programs for 3 and 4-year old children.

To be eligible for enrollment in HISD’s free full-day pre-kindergarten programs, a child must meet these requirements.

The first chance to apply for pre-kindergarten programs in HISD goes through Thursday, March 10. After March 10, qualified students will be considered on a space-available basis.

Families will be notified of their acceptance to a pre-kindergarten program by Thursday, April 7 at 11:59 p.m.

HISD strongly encourages families to apply early— applying by or before March 10 not only gives peace of mind, but also ensures that your child has every opportunity to get into their best-fit school.
