Superintendent Millard House II along with HISD community partner Group 1 Automotive selected Neka Carwell from R.P. Harris Elementary School as May’s Teacher of the Month.
“She was born to be a teacher before even being a teacher,” said House.
Carwell began her career with HISD 24 years ago as a campus volunteer. During that time, she was inspired to become a teacher and continue making a difference in the lives of students. Today, she teaches first-grade reading.
“It’s my hope that I can spark dreams of a higher education,” said Carwell. “I want my kids to know that they can and they will be our future leaders.”
During Wednesday’s surprise campus visit, Carwell’s students were equally as excited about the award, chanting “We love you, Ms. Carwell!” as pictures were taken.
Carwell still volunteers outside of the classroom through student council and dance team. She also mentors new teachers to help them grow into their roles as educators.
