On Sunday, June 19, our nation commemorates Juneteenth, also known as Emancipation Day. Union Major-General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston on June 19, 1865 and informed the enslaved Black people in Texas of their freedom more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.
In observance of the federal holiday, all HISD schools and offices will be closed Monday, June 20.
Friday, June 17, will be an instructional day for summer school students and staff in lieu of Monday, June 20. Summer school sessions will resume on Tuesday, June 21.
As a reminder, the “40 in Four” work schedule will begin Tuesday, June 21, and end on Friday, Aug. 5.
