On Saturday, volunteers will spend the morning visiting students who stopped attending school to encourage them to return and graduate. HISD’s annual Grads Within Reach Walk is an opportunity for community members to come together to keep students in school.
The walk is organized by HISD’s Dropout Prevention/Recovery team which works together with community partners and other HISD departments to set students up for success.
“The mission of the Dropout Prevention Program is to remove barriers to attendance and achievement by providing district-wide leadership and intervention-based solutions to increase student attendance and decrease the student dropout rate,” said Carl Green, a manager in the Office of Student Assistance.
The 2022 Grads Within Reach Walk is scheduled for Saturday, September 10, from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
The walk will begin at Washington High School, 4204 Yale Street, 77018. If you would like to volunteer, register here.
September is Attendance Awareness Month. A student is considered chronically absent if they miss two or more days of school per month, and grades can be withheld if a student misses more than 10% (17 days) school per year.
