Organizations citywide are rallying to provide backpacks, school supplies, immunizations, and food to families in need for the 2024-2025 school year. The first day of school for HISD is Monday, Aug. 12.

Mayor’s Back 2 School Fest
Date: Aug. 3, 2024
Time: 1 p.m. – 7 p.m.
Location: George R. Brown Convention Center (1001 Avenida De Las Americas, 77010)
About: Partnering with Shell, the Houston Mayor’s Office is once again holding the Mayor’s Back 2 School Fest to help ready economically disadvantaged Houston-area families to send their elementary students back to school. The event will feature on-site health, dental, and vision screenings, immunizations, and other social services. Additionally, 25,000 backpacks with school supplies will be given out on a first come, first served basis.

NHC’s Back to School Bash
Date: Aug. 3, 2024
Time: 12 p.m. – 2 p.m.
Location: Little York Villas (3111 Little York Rd., 77091)
About: Natural Head Corp. will offer food, face-painting, children’s activities, and more, including complimentary school supplies to be distributed on a first come, first served basis.

Back to School Carnival
Date: Aug. 3, 2024
Time: 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Location: Buckner Children and Family Services of Houston (8600 Sweetwater Ln., 77037)
About: Buckner CFSH are offering food, music, and fun at their annual back-to-school carnival. Attending school-aged children will receive a free backpack, shoes, and socks. 

Back to School Birth Certificate Event
Date: Aug. 3, 2024
Time: 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Location: Chimney Rock Annex (6000 Chimney Rock Rd., 77081)
About: The Harris County Clerk’s Office is offering assistance in obtaining birth certificates needed for school registration. The first 100 people in line will receive one birth certificate free of charge, and any additional birth certificates will be available for $23 each. 

HISD Back to School Resource Fair & Backpack Giveaway
Date: Aug. 10, 2024
Time: 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Location: Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center (4400 W. 18th St., 77092)
About: HISD will provide free community health resources and an informational resource fair to showcase the resources available to HISD students and their families. They also will provide free backpacks and school supplies (while supplies last. No registration required).

HISD Student Supports Back to School Fair
Date: Aug. 10, 2024
Time: 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Location: Yates High School (3650 Alabama St., 77004) and Wisdom High School (6529 Beverly Hill St., 77057)
About: HISD Student Supports Department is providing free health screenings, immunizations, parent workshops, and food and uniform distributions (while supplies last).

Back 2 School Daze Annual School Supply Drive
Date: Aug. 10, 2024
Time: 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Location: Houston Texans YMCA (5202 Griggs Rd., 77021)
About: The Houston Texans YMCA invites families to their annual school supply drive. Essential supplies will be provided to teachers and students and attendees can enjoy music, food, and activities as well as fun contests for children every 30 minutes.

GRIND Day Back to School Kickoff
Date: Aug. 11, 2024
Time: 4 p.m. – 7 p.m.
Location: GRIND Warehouse (6300 Navigation Blvd., 77011)
About: GRIND Interactive is holding a back to school giveaway, supplying school essentials to the first 200 Houston elementary and middle school students. The event will include games, a bounce house and food, as well as music provided by 93.7 The Beat and a three-pointer contest for high schoolers.
