J.P. Henderson Elementary has new furniture in its teachers’ lounge, thanks to Gallery Furniture, Univision 45 and Children at Risk.
The furniture store is making over several teachers’ lounges throughout the Houston area. It asked Univision 45 to pick a school, and the TV station asked Children at Risk for a recommendation.
“When Univision called that I had really good news, I ran to my office and said that I need good news – it’s the beginning of school!” Principal Herlinda Garcia said. “This sends a very strong message from the community to the teachers that we do care about you.”

Bob Sanborn, president and chief executive officer of Children at Risk, said the makeover is a big thank-you to the teachers for their hard work.
“I think what’s terrific about J.P. Henderson is that every teacher goes above and beyond,” Sanborn said. “There seems to be a real missionary zeal.”
Three other television stations selected four Houston ISD schools to receive teachers’ lounge makeovers. KHOU picked Field Elementary, Telemundo chose Red and Helms elementary schools, and CW39 chose Yates High School.
Gallery Furniture is also accepting nominations from the public, and out of those they’ll pick 20 schools to get makeovers. If you’d like to nominate a school, head on over to Gallery Furniture’s website.
