Have you or someone you know ever thought about becoming a teacher? If you want to positively impact and influence a child’s life, then HISD’s Effective Teacher Fellowship (ETF) could be the program for you.
ETF is the district’s alternative certification program, which provides non-education majors with a different pathway to state certification and becoming a teacher. Recruitment is in full force, and ETF plans to accept at least 300 teachers for the 2015–2016 school year.
Effective first-year teachers can be developed with the right coaching, support, and training, and ETF is searching for people who will be relentlessly committed to student learning in HISD.
“Our fundamental concern is kids, and we put them first in all we do,” said ETF Director Natalie Rubio. “They deserve skilled teachers who care about them. ETF is providing a pipeline of novice teachers who are driven and prepared to help our students succeed, and our staff is passionate about training these new educators to serve our students and communities.”
ETF teachers are not only ready to take on the challenges of teaching, they also have little trouble finding a job once they finish. Last year, 98 percent of ETF teachers secured employment for the coming school year.
Principals who work with ETF teachers have high praise for them. In response to an end-of-year survey, 90 percent of principals with ETF teachers on staff agreed or strongly agreed that ETF is a quality novice teacher training program and that they would hire graduates from that program again in the future. In addition, more than 95 percent of last year’s ETF teachers said they felt supported by the program after they completed it.
