Lamar High School’s swim team earned its bragging rights recently when Safa Anya became first male swimmer in Lamar’s history to win a UIL state championship. He came in first in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 55.41.

“We are extremely proud of Safa,” said Lamar swim coach S.R. “Mac” McDonald. “We hope this shines a light on all of our swimmers. Lamar has a great program, and if young aspiring swimmers come to Lamar, they may win a state championship.”

The rest of the team made an exceptional showing at the meet as well. Ben Lux was the first Lamar freshman to score in a UIL state diving meet. Also, the 4 by 50 Sprint Relay team – Anya, John Nielsen, Ridge Livermore and Nolan Hines – made finals in the state meet, setting a new school record of 1:25.18.

Throughout Lamar swim team’s long history, they have excelled consistently. In the last 25 years, they have captured a district title every season, while earning as high as third place at the state swimming and diving championships. This year, 40 members of the team competed at the district level, 27 at regionals, and Anya, Nielsen, Livermore, Hines and Lux went to state competition.

Many members of the team are enrolled in the International Baccalaureate program and are among the top students in their class while maintaining a vigorous practice schedule. Congratulations to the Lamar swim team on their outstanding performance.
