Event to kick off construction phase for the all-male academy in the Fifth Ward
| What: | The Mickey Leland College Preparatory Academy for Young Men will hold a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the beginning of the construction phase for its new school building. The new $42.4 million building, part of HISD’s bond program to build or renovate 40 schools in the district, will accommodate up to 1,000 students. The campus will be built on the site of the former Wheatley/E.O. Smith building in the Fifth Ward. The design plans include several features that will incorporate and honor the history and accomplishments of that campus and its alumni.
The school became an all-male college preparatory academy in 2011 and was renamed after the late congressman and Fifth Ward native Mickey Leland in 2014. Students who attend Leland College Prep experience a small and inclusive environment, enriched with a rigorous college preparatory curriculum emphasizing science, technology, engineering and math. |
