Coach Granvil “Wayne” Tedder has been guiding HISD athletes to greatness for more than 30 years, but on Jan. 22, district officials and students took time out to honor him, with a special ceremony held at Bellaire High School to induct him into the HISD and Houston Coaches Association Hall of Honor.
“It is quite an honor to be recognized by your peers, players, and friends,” said Tedder. “No one in my family graduated from high school except me. But I had coaches who helped me out, so I have dedicated my life to giving back what was given to me: love, knowledge, and commitment.”
Tedder first joined Team HISD in 1985 as the head coach at Lee High School, but he also served as the campus’s athletics director. Since 1994, he has been the assistant football coach and hitting coach for the baseball team at Bellaire High School. Over the years, Tedder has helped send more than 200 athletes to Division I colleges, as well as seven players to the major leagues. In 1999, his team won the state and national baseball championships. He was inducted into the Bellaire Baseball Hall of Fame in 2000.
“Coach Tedder really made an impact at HISD,” added Bellaire Coach Rocky Manuel. “We wouldn’t have the great program we have today with his dedication and sacrifices.”
“Coach Tedder always made sure players had what they needed, whether it was a well-manicured field or extra practice,” said Bellaire Principal Mike McDonough. “I have known him for almost 15 years, and I have seen him on the field, supporting all kinds of athletes. It makes me proud, and shows that once you’re a part of Bellaire family, you’re always a part of the Bellaire family.”
“It was an honor to recognize Coach Tedder,” said HISD Athletics Director Marmion Dambrino. “He gave years of untiring devotion to both boys and girls at Lee and Bellaire high schools. His dedication is unmatched.”
