Students at schools across HISD have been participating in everything from pep rallies to skate parties over the past few weeks to build awareness around the next administration of the STAAR test, which begins on Tuesday, March 29.
At Stevens Elementary School, for example, students geared up to rock the upcoming test by participating in a STAAR-themed pep rally. Third- and fifth-grade students reviewed test-taking strategies as they sang popular song titles, while school staff members participated in a pie-throwing contest to motivate students to do their best and to demonstrate their support. Teachers also formed a dance group called the STAARlettes, and put on a dance number for students.
“It is really important to emphasize the importance of planning ahead and keeping a positive mindset,” said Counselor Tatiana Martinez. “We care very deeply about the overall well-being of our students, and we want to encourage them to keep up their stamina and passion for success as we go through testing season.”
The Stevens event concluded with a basketball game that pitted students against teachers. A group of fifth-graders representing the student body and a team of teachers from various grade levels went head to head. Both teams played an intense game, but teachers were victorious in the end.
“You can feel the excitement from all of our students and teachers,” added Martinez. “It’s great to see that we’re all doing this as one unit, and supporting the success of each other.”
