Take a trip around the world at expo of Pre-K students’ work

In honor of Laurenzo Early Childhood Center becoming a dual-language school this year, the faculty adopted an international theme for their annual expo. Every class chose a different country to study for eight weeks, and their project-based lesson plans included students’ asking questions, engaging in investigations, and making discoveries.

Projects on India, Belize, Greece, France, Vietnam, Kenya, and more displayed throughout the school effectively convey the value and complexity of the entire process. Visitors are welcome to the school every day for the rest of the week (through Friday, April 15).

Five-year-old Avriana’s class picked China, and she proudly showed off a multitude of projects made by her class and put on display outside their classroom. The students discovered that China invented kites and toilet paper, so they constructed their own kites and created their own toilet paper from scratch. Avriana proudly showed off a ceramic vase and a small woven-ribbon blanket she made.

“You make an invention by thinking about it first,” Avriana said. “Then you plan it, and next you build it.” Her invention is a paper cutout of her hand with holes where her fingernails are so that when she paints her nails, she won’t get nail polish all over her fingers.

Other countries and related activities include:

  • Australia: Students tasted and grew kiwi from seeds
  • Ireland: They built castles from recycled materials like cereal boxes and cardboard tubes
  • Netherlands: Students painted their own version Van Gogh’s paintings, including “Starry Night”
  • Egypt: They built elaborate pyramids and did related drawings
