Work on the new Madison High School is now underway as crews have demolished athletic fields and begun construction on a new parking lot across the street from the current building.
The work is part of the project’s first phase, which also includes construction of the new high school. Passersby can expect to see steel being erected over the summer as crews officially begin construction of the building.
“Our main goal by the end of June or early July is to have 100 or so more people on site,” Satterfield & Pontikes Construction Job Site Superintendent Tony Ball said during a recent Project Advisory Team meeting. “You’ll start to see things really progress in the next few months.”
Construction of the $93.9 million new school is part of the voter-approved 2012 Bond Program. According to design plans, the two-story building will be built facing West Orem Drive on the school’s existing athletic fields.
A two-story foyer will double as a dining commons and large gathering space, while also providing plenty of natural light. The school entrance will be flanked by three, two-story academic wings to the east and performing arts and community spaces to the west. The gym and athletics area would be located to the northeast. Also located to the northeast will be a new competition swimming pool.
Ball noted that crews already have installed six new modular buildings at the northeast corner of the property. These buildings will replace six existing temporary buildings located along the east side of the campus that must be removed to make way for construction. The new buildings should be ready for move-in by mid-June, he added.
Construction of the new school is expected to be complete by the end of the fourth quarter of 2018. Once the new school has been built and teachers and students have moved in, crews will begin phase two, which calls for the demolition of the old school to make way for new athletic fields.

A groundbreaking celebration is scheduled for 5 p.m. on August 24, 2017. The communitywide celebration will be held in conjunction with the school’s freshman orientation. More information about the groundbreaking will be provided to the school community over the summer.
Madison is among 40 schools, including 29 high schools, across the district being renovated or rebuilt as part of the 2012 Bond Program. The district currently has roughly three dozen schools under construction — more than any other time in district history. Almost half of all projects are expected to be completed and open to students by the start of the 2017-2018 school year. Once all work is complete, HISD will boast of one of the most modern urban high schools portfolios in the nation.
