This is the third year for the Teach Forward Houston program, a collaboration with the University of Houston College of Education (COE) and HISD to educate students in return for their commitment to teach in HISD schools for four years.

Recently 25 students from 18 HISD high schools were admitted into the Teaching & Learning program. They join Cohort 1 and 2, as they embark on the Teach Forward Houston journey, which will take them from high school to college to an HISD classroom to teach. The first two cohorts continue to be successful at UH.  Cohort 1, with 49 students from 23 HISD high schools, has finished the first two years with an average GPA of 2.912. Cohort 2, with 34 students from 21 high schools, has completed their freshman year with an average GPA of 2.834.

Teach Forward Houston fellows move through their degree plan in a cohort fashion, which means they will progress with many other Teach Forward Houston fellows. Research indicates that cohorts benefit by providing support to one another, not only academically but socially. Students are encouraged to collaborate with each other, form study groups, and indulge in deep discussions.

Teach Forward Houston students benefit from a network of support from both the UH COE and HISD. Resources are available for tutoring, emotional support, and career services through UH’s Urban Experience Program, where students have a dedicated program coordinator. They also benefit from hands-on training and top-notch faculty. Other positive aspects of the program include:
