Facilities Services and Fleet Operations prepares campuses, vehicles for start of school

HISD’s Facilities Services and Fleet Operations department has been working hard this summer to ensure students have clean, comfortable learning spaces and reliable transportation to and from school.

The department cleaned schools, made renovations to several campuses, worked on climate control systems, serviced cars, took care of the grounds, welded metal, and maintained security.

Facilities Services and Fleet Operations Officer Alishia Jolivette said the department’s new tagline — We solve. We serve. We maintain. — guides their daily efforts.

“Our goal is to maintain excellent service for students, staff and the community, while providing a safe, clean environment at every campus and facility,” Jolivette said.

This summer, custodial staff across the district waxed floors, vacuumed rugs, cleaned windows, walls, and vents, removed graffiti, sanded and repainted walls, and cleaned and sanitized schools.

The Direct Digital Control and Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning teams worked together to identify and repair any problems with air conditioning systems and boilers.

Fleet Operations mechanics continued their work under the hoods of HISD vehicles, replacing worn-out tires and brake pads, restoring trailers, and even welding brackets to serve as side steps.

The Grounds and Pest Control team kept lawns trimmed and parking lots tidy while welders repaired damaged fences and replaced drain pans for rusted air conditioning units.

In Security Maintenance, the team ensured security systems and equipment were fully functioning — an essential task during the summer, when many buildings are largely unoccupied.

Facilities Services and Fleet Operations also welcomed into its fold the Crossing Guard Division. Previously part of HISD’s Police Department, crossing guards have been integrated into Custodial Operations.
