Last school year saw the launch of the G-Unity Business Lab, backed by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson and his foundation, at three HISD high schools.

Now in year two, the program has expanded to additional schools.

The G-Unity Business Lab department spent the first weeks of school accepting applications and interviewing more than 400 students.

Now that the G-STARS have been selected, the road to the 2023 Hustle Tank begins.

Over the next several months, the G-STARS will create business plans for their companies while collaborating with local business leaders and entrepreneurs who serve as Business Lab Coaches.

The first order of business was opening bank accounts during G-STAR Orientation. As part of the program, the students will get paid and simultaneously participate in financial literacy workshops. Bank On Houston, a non-profit initiative from the City of Houston Controller’s Office, worked with TDECU to assist the students in setting up accounts where they can keep the money they earn and bank independently and safely.

While the new G-STARS were welcomed to the program, the inaugural winners of the Hustle Tank attended a speaking engagement and conference hosted  by the nonprofit Six Figure Chics. The students were a part of a panel that brought together young entrepreneurs, seasoned business leaders, and  internationally recognized names.

In addition to exploring financial literacy and business acumen, the G-STARS will build out their innovative ideas and put together pitches for the Hustle Tank judges to seek actual investment funding.

The second annual competition is set for May 2023.
