HISD’s Dyad classes are an innovative educational tool designed to expose students to unique skills taught by members of the community. The beauty of Dyad is its versatility and the one-of-a-kind opportunities it allows students to experience.

The Boy Scouts of America have stepped in to partner with HISD and bring Scouting to Shadydale Elementary School and Key Middle School in a special Dyad course called ScoutReach. These students and this partnership were lauded at the Houston Sports Breakfast on May 1 at the George R. Brown Convention Center.

The Houston Sports Breakfast takes place annually and is a huge event for the Houston Scouting community. It is an opportunity for the Boy Scouts of America to recognize major donors and solicit further support for the organization and is regularly attended by celebrities such as boxing legend George Foreman, present this year. The breakfast was attended by more than 600 business leaders and sports enthusiasts, and HISD’s Dyad Scouts performed the ceremonial presentation of the U.S. and Texas flags.

“The Boys Scouts of American Sam Houston Council partnership has impacted our students by helping to build their vocabulary, enhance their critical thinking skills, and preparing them for Destination 2035,” said Aiesha Odutayo, Director of NES Dyad.

ScoutReach classes are taught by Scout Leaders from Boy Scouts of America Sam Houston Area Council, which serves 16 counties throughout Southeast Texas, and assisted by Dyad consultants. The Boy Scouts partnership provides the more than 50 student Scouts (boys and girls) with opportunities and experiences to learn basic survival skills, healthy eating habits, and about the environment around them.

“This partnership with HISD’s DYAD program allows these kids to create their very own Scouting adventure,” said ScoutReach Director Sidney Castillo. “Thanks to the leadership of HISD for recognizing what Scouting can bring to these youth that may otherwise not have that chance to grow and experience what lifelong values, a life of giving service and what positive achievement can mean to them.”
