Safe, collaborative spaces key design elements for new Davis, Dowling

Project Advisory Teams for Davis High School and Dowling Middle School looked for ways to make their facilities better with collaborative and transparent student-centered designs that provide safe and engaging learning environments.

Both groups participated in a two-day design charrette Monday and Tuesday with the schools’ architects to discuss pros and cons of the existing facilities and sites and to share design ideas for facilities that will move academic and social cultures into the 21st century.

Yates design concepts capture school history, enhance collaboration

The Project Advisory Team for Yates High School discussed how the current building is used and how to create a new facility that embraces the school’s history and enhances its academics and special programs in a 21st century learning environment.

Video showcases unique design concepts for Mandarin Chinese school

HISD released a new video that highlights the planning and design of the new Mandarin Chinese Language Immersion Magnet School as a transparent three-story facility enhanced with Chinese culture and environmental concepts.

The school, which will be designed by PBK Architects, Inc., is one of 40 schools HISD will rebuild and renovate into a 21st century learning environment with funds from the district’s 2012 bond program. Construction on the new facility at West Alabama Street and McCulloch Circle is scheduled to begin later this year.

Parker Elementary community gets first look at plans for new school

During a community meeting on Tuesday night, Parker Elementary shared plans about how its 55-year-old school will be replaced with a new two-story facility, complete with green spaces on two sides and musical performance hall.

A building concept with a courtroom and law library in the center of the new High School for Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice set the premise for a site plan for the new school developed by students, staff and community members at a design charrette Wednesday and Thursday.

Green schools shaping good stewards of environment

Berry Elementary School second-graders took out their green plastic knifes and chopped red peppers, cucumbers, cilantro and carrots before tossing the ingredients into a mixing bowl.

“This is fun,” said student Amairanny Macias as she smelled the ingredients for the herb quinoa and bean salad the students were making from ingredients from the school’s vegetable garden. “We’re going to mix the cheese in next.”

Bond Oversight Committee updated on first quarter progress

bond_oversight_webThe next eight months of the year will be marked by much progress in the 2012 bond program, including the start of construction on all of the schools in the first group.

“We’re moving very quickly through our design phase,” said Daniel Bankhead, HISD’s general manager of Facilities Design. “This is an exciting time. We’re defining the character of the buildings.”
