HISD to Hear from Students on Planning Phase of 2012 Bond

As HISD begins the planning phase for the 2012 bond program, which will replace or rebuild 40 schools across the city, the district is seeking valuable input from its most important stakeholders: students.

Architecture professors from Rice University and the University of Houston will lead four focus groups on Jan. 31 at the district’s headquarters to get students thinking about what kinds of buildings they would like to see. Each 90-minute focus group will include up to 12 HISD students, all coming from a bond campus high school.  Continue reading

HISD Seeks Volunteers for Bond Oversight Committee

The Houston Independent School District is looking for volunteers to serve on its newly reorganized Bond Oversight Committee as the district embarks on its $1.89 billion bond program approved by voters in November.

Administrators decided in December to revise the committee charter to give the group of up to nine members a more active role in monitoring the district’s bond program and keeping the public informed on new construction and renovation projects.

Reagan K-8 Officially Dedicated, Honoring Former HISD Superintendent

The doors of Billy Reagan K-8 Educational Center opened for students in August, but on Wednesday, the school community got a chance to celebrate the new school with its official dedication.

More than 200 people, including neighbors, parents, faculty, and HISD officials, attended the ceremony at the campus off Anderson Road to recognize the new campus and honor the school’s namesake, former HISD superintendent Billy Reagan. During his opening remarks, Superintendent Terry Grier said Reagan made significant contributions to education in the city of Houston and across the country.

HSPVA Neighbors Discuss Bond Program, Future of Existing School

HISD officials spoke to a crowd of 15 at the First Montrose Neighborhood Association’s monthly meeting Tuesday at the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts to discuss how the $1.89 billion 2012 bond program will impact the surrounding community.

The bond project will replace or rebuild 40 schools across the district, including HSPVA.

Meeting attendees asked questions about the future of current facility at 4001 Stanford St., after the school moves to its new proposed location at 1300 Capitol St., blocks away from Minute Maid Park in downtown Houston. The new facility will provide instructional and performance spaces appropriate for the arts-centered curriculum, including large theatrical performance areas, along with a recital hall, dance studio, and rehearsal spaces.

Firms Submit Architectural, Engineering Qualifications for 2012 Bond

Nearly 100 firms met HISD’s Jan. 15 deadline to submit their qualifications to take part in the architectural and engineering phase of the 2012 bond program to repair or replace 40 schools across the city.

District officials accepted proposals up until the advertised deadline of 2 p.m., logging each submission and labeling it with a time stamp.

African American Advisory Committee Gets Update on 2012 Bond Program

HISD’s African American Advisory Committee heard firsthand Tuesday the latest updates on the 2012 bond program, which includes an ongoing pledge to keep Houston’s minority community informed on opportunities to do business with the district.

Reagan K-8 Center to dedicate new school on Wednesday

reaganBilly Reagan Educational K-8 Center, one of HISD’s newest campuses, will host its school dedication, Wednesday, Jan. 16, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. for students, parents, and community members.

The school’s namesake, Dr. Billy Reagan, was HISD’s superintendent from 1974 to 1986. During Reagan’s 12 years with the district, he created the magnet school system and launched the district’s first International Baccalaureate program. For more than 50 years, he has been dedicated to improving the quality of education for all students in Texas. Continue reading

Want to do business with HISD? Register for ‘Workshop Wednesday’

The Houston Independent School District’s Business Assistance department is hosting the first of a two-part workshop series for potential contractors interested in bidding on upcoming projects with the district on Wednesday, Jan. 9,  from 3-5 p.m. at HISD’s CFS Operations (formerly Brock Elementary School) at 1417 Houston Ave.

Participants will learn about submitting proposals, get more information on RFPs and RFQs, and hear more about the proposal evaluation process for the district’s $1.89 billion bond program, which will fund the replacement or repair of 40 schools.

 “These workshops are to ensure that all bidders have a good understanding of the RFP process and the district’s expectations,” said Alexis Licata, HISD’s general manager of Business Assistance.

The second portion of the series is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 6, also from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. The Office of Business Assistance hosts workshops the first Wednesday of every month.

Board President Television Show Takes an Up Close Look at Next Steps in 2012 Bond Program

Who: The January 2013 edition of HISD Up Close hosted by HISD Board President Michael Lunceford discusses the next steps in the 2012 HISD Bond Program, which was overwhelmingly approved by voters in November. The program also takes a closer look at Istation, an online tool that elementary school teachers across the district are using for literacy assessment and intervention. Fellow Board Trustee Paula Harris also stops by with three principals to talk about some of the exciting things happening at schools in the neighborhoods she represents.

Deadline extended for HISD’s RFQ on architectural, engineering services

Architectural and engineering firms seeking to take part in the Houston Independent School District’s $1.89 billion 2012 bond program to replace and modernize schools across the city will have more time to submit their Statement of Qualifications.

HISD officials decided to push back the deadline from Jan. 7 to Jan. 15 at 2 p.m. after more than 300 people turned out Tuesday for a pre-submittal conference on the RFQ to solicit design and engineering services to build or renovate 40 schools.

Attendees asked a variety of questions about the RFQ, including how to present financial information and how to comply with district goals on participation by minority and women-owned business enterprises. In addition, many asked for more time to prepare their submissions. Continue reading
