Does your child need to go to summer school? Apply by May 19

If your child needs to attend a summer school program, be sure to apply soon – the deadline is May 19. You may download the application online, but it must be turned in to the main office at your child’s school.

Summer school programs are coordinated at the district level, planned at the campus level, and customized to meet the needs of students.  Because each participating campus plans the programs, schools have the flexibility to set the dates and times for classes. Please check with your campus directly for its schedule. No classes will be held on Friday, July 4.

Classes are free for all students in grades K-12 who were enrolled as of the last day of school in an HISD Title I school and who need to meet promotion standards and/or pass the STAAR test.

Here are the summer school programs offered in HISD:

PROGRAM STUDENT ELIGIBILITY
English Language Learners (ELL) Current PK and K ELL students
Extended School Year Services Special education students who did not meet ARD committee requirements or who were recommended by the ARD committee to attend summer school
Promotion/Retention Students in grades 1-12 who did not meet HISD promotion standards
STAAR Re-test Fifth- and eighth-grade students who did not perform to standard on the STAAR test
Accelerated Instruction STAAR reading and math third through eighth grade; STAAR EOC re-testers; TAKS re-testers
ELL/Newcomers Secondary students who are academically behind
Enrichment: Campus-Based Programs Students zoned to campus (tuition may apply)

Transportation generally is not provided for summer school, so parents will need to make arrangements to get their children to the classes. Free breakfast and lunch will be served, but parents are advised to check with their child’s campus to obtain a meal schedule.
