Garden Oaks Elementary students recently had a hands-on chance to learn more about science, technology, engineering and math thanks to help from Waltrip High School.
The theme of the May 22 STEM Night was “Around the World with STEM.” Students were given passports to visit four different areas. “Roboville” was one of the most popular “countries.”
Waltrip’s robotics coach visited the school with “Stevie,” a humanoid robot that can dance, and Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) robot that students used in a competition at NASA. The MATE robot is a more advanced version of the Sea Perch robots Garden Oaks students have been building and demonstrating.
Waltrip also loaned Garden Oaks a few practice boards from Games Robots Play, which allowed the elementary students to work with LEGO Mindstorms NXT robots and LEGO WeDo robots.
