Construction at both North Houston Early and South Early college high schools is nearing completion, with preparations underway to have both campuses ready for students at the beginning of the 2016-2017 school year.
At North Houston Early, construction crews are working to have the campus fully completed by the start of summer vacation. Final site preparation is ongoing for the new $13.5 million, 59,000-square-foot school, which will accommodate 400 students at the Houston Community College (HCC) Northline Campus.
“The building’s exterior is now complete, and interior finishes on classrooms and restrooms are underway,” said project manager Ronald Roberts of Kwame Building Group.
North Houston Early will feature modern science labs, flexible learning spaces, and a college resource center to provide students with college scholarship and registration information, as well as access to counselors. Many students who graduate from the school will earn their associate’s degree in the same month they receive a high school diploma. Both campuses are two of five early college schools within HISD that offer students the opportunity to earn college credit while still in high school.
At South Early College High School, site concrete work is wrapping up, and interior finishes are underway. Piping also is being installed in the building, and roof installation and exterior framing are complete.
“SECHS is moving full steam ahead in anticipation of the opening and moving into the new SECHS location at 1990 Airport Boulevard,” said South Early College High School Principal Steven Gourrier.
Located on the campus of Houston Community College South Campus, the 57,000-square-foot facility will accommodate 400 students and will feature flexible learning spaces that support the school’s technological programs – including robotics, computer technology, and software engineering.

In anticipation for South Early’s opening, Gourrier says summer programming is being planned for the incoming freshman class of 2020 to attend a Summer Bridge program. The two-week program will include HCC Boot Camp, high school English Language Arts (ELA) and Algebra Readiness courses, school culture and STEM orientation.
