HISD Transportation seeking top-notch drivers, attendants to join its team

HISD Transportation Department is rolling out its latest recruitment campaign, seeking out the best school bus drivers and attendants to join its nationally recognized team for the upcoming school year.

The department has been hard at work this summer searching for candidates to join its staff of 1,200 employees responsible for safely ferrying about 34,000 students to and from school each day.

In additional to daily routes, drivers also are tasked with transporting students to and from field trips, athletic competitions, and other events.

“We’re a nationally award-winning department, and we have the best staff with a fun working environment,” said HISD Transportation General Manager Nathan Graf. “Our goal is to provide drivers for every single bus route by the first day of school.”

The department provides paid Commercial Driver’s License training classes (applicants can receive up to 104 training hours), guaranteed route hours, flexible schedules, high-tech buses, and health and retirement benefits to employees.

Drivers earn between $15.70 and $16.64 per hour. In addition, all new bus drivers and attendants are eligible for a $1,200 perfect attendance incentive bonus, and a $100 referral for every new employee they refer to the department.

All applicants are subject to verification of work experience, certification, references, and a criminal history check. Applicants should bring two forms of identification, along with their resume, to the job fair.
