While school is out for the summer, HISD nutrition services chefs are busy in the test kitchen creating and sampling new menu items for the coming school year. And what our chefs have learned from the previous year is that our students want bold flavors, fresh ingredients, and culturally diverse food.

HISD students have sophisticated palates and adventurous, international tastes, so HISD chefs have created Chicken Tikka Masala; flakey, buttery breakfast croissants; Asian lettuce wraps; and Chicken Cordon Bleu sandwiches, to name just a few of the new menu items. All new items meet both USDA requirements for healthy school meals and students’ taste buds.

HISD has eight professional chefs who create recipes and train school kitchen staff to make and serve food that is pleasing to the eye and appetizing to the palate.

HISD school menus will be changing this year with the addition of more fresh fruits and vegetables and food that students are excited to eat.

This year the menu will be chef-inspired so that students can look forward to eating at school while getting the nutrition they need to thrive in the classroom.
