Milby High School English teacher Jill Hobbs was beyond surprised when HISD Superintendent Richard Carranza and Sterling McCall VIP Services stopped by her classroom on Dec. 5 to proclaim her the HISD Teacher of the month. In fact, the Achieve 180 teacher and 20-year veteran was at a total loss for words when she learned that she would get to drive a 2017 Lexus ES 350 for a month, courtesy of Sterling McCall Lexus.

“I’m in complete shock, and have never had the opportunity to drive in luxury,” Hobbs said. “It is truly an honor to be awarded this month, and I can’t wait to enjoy the vehicle during my commute to campus and grad school.”

Known around campus as a relentless teacher with a tough yet compassionate spirit, Hobbs is the second teacher to be recognized for her commitment to the classroom thanks to Sterling McCall VIP Services. Colleagues say she is devoted to the success of her scholars and is frequently visited by former students. Some might say she’s the most visited on campus.

“For years, Ms. Hobbs has dedicated her time and strength to the excellence of Milby students,” said Milby High School Principal Roy de la Garza. “During her tenure, she has taught many Saturday tutorials and is known to even pick up students who may not have a ride.”

A mentor to many Milby students, Hobbs’ resilient attitude can also be found in her own personal education journey. She is currently enrolled in a master’s program in English at the University of Houston with a goal to teach dual credit, in addition to, pre-AP/AP at Milby.

“At HISD we are continuing to highlight teachers like Ms. Hobbs who are passionate about finding the greatest needs of their students and taking extraordinary strides to fill them,” Carranza said. “The students that are blessed to have her as a teacher have a better sense of their capabilities, and it is because of her that they never give up.”

“It is the students who continue to drive my success in the classroom,” Hobbs said. “It is my desire to equip them as best as I can with the proper tools that empower them to succeed beyond high school.”

As part of the Teacher of the Month program, HISD Superintendent Richard Carranza, along with a representative from Sterling McCall VIP Services, surprises a teacher and presents the outstanding educator with an award, a gift basket of promotional items, a $150 gift card, and a luxury loaner vehicle.

Each of the seven HISD Area Superintendents are responsible for selecting a teacher from their region to be honored from Nov 2017 to May 2018. Principals who would like to nominate a teacher on their campus should contact their School Support Officer of Area Superintendent directly.
