The Houston Independent School District is launching HISD @ H.O.M.E. TV to provide educational programming as part of the district’s HISD @ H.O.M.E distance learning plan.
HISD @ H.O.M.E. TV will kick off on Tuesday, March 31 with instructional videos that include lessons from teachers and teacher development specialists in several subject areas, including math, science, reading and writing, social studies, and fine arts.
“Our mission is to support students in every community with the educational resources they need to thrive, and this is an important step in that effort – especially given the current need to deliver instruction virtually,” said Interim Superintendent Grenita Lathan. “I want to thank our HISD Communications and Academics teams for supporting our students during these unprecedented times.”
HISD has also partnered with Fox 26’s sister station My20 to broadcast HISD content. My20 will air a one-hour video produced by HISD Communications on a weekly basis featuring a variety of lessons and information from HISD for the community.
“As a communications team, we always strive to innovate and create new and exciting ways to connect with our audiences, no matter the circumstance,” said Chief Communications Officer Rebecca Suarez. “Through this platform, we will be able to bring a virtual classroom into the homes of our students and families to ensure learning continues.”
The HISD @ H.O.M.E. TV effort, coordinated by the Academics and Communications departments, utilized instruction provided by HISD school staff.
“I am so grateful to our teachers and teacher development specialists for providing these guided lessons in a format that is accessible to our students,” said Interim Chief Academic Officer Yolanda Rodriguez. “Our educators are always willing to step up to deliver quality instruction – whether that’s one-on-one in the classroom or virtually.”
Houston Public Media will also promote HISD @ H.O.M.E. TV and provide additional educational programing for parents and students through PBS TV Channel 8 at-home learning.
Segments will be in English and Spanish, and will broadcast on HISD-TV (Comcast Channel 18 and Uverse Channel 99), as well as online via HoustonISD.org/LiveTV.
The HISD @ H.O.M.E. distance learning plan includes curriculum by grade level and subject matter that is designed to maintain productive instruction for students using computers, laptops, tablets, iPads or smartphones. For more information, visit HoustonISD.org/AtHome.
