HISD unveiled its first library upgrade in partnership with PNC, the Houston Dynamo, and Houston Dash in a ribbon cutting ceremony at Bellfort Early Childhood Center on Dec. 13.
The initiative aims to maximize literacy in early childhood and create enrichment opportunities that some students in the HISD community might not have access to otherwise.
“This partnership aligns with the district’s mission that every child has equitable opportunities and equal access to effective and personalized education in a nurturing and safe environment,” said HISD Deputy Superintendent Dr. Rick Cruz.
In a special surprise, PNC increased its initial donation of $150,000 to $180,000. In total, eight HISD early childhood campuses will receive library refreshes and upgrades that include book nooks, beautification projects, books in multiple languages, new furniture, reading kits, and new technology.
Additionally, students will have access to PNC’s Grow Up Great® workshops where they can develop financial literacy and prepare for real-world financial situations. Part of the investment will also go towards librarian training, scholarships, and programming events in service of that goal.
Bellfort ECC students were invited to the ribbon cutting to explore the new space.
“Our children have been gifted with an opportunity to learn in a fun way that always allows them to dream big,” said Principal Jesseye Brown. “Here at Belfort, our little ones—they do big things—and we’re excited that this newly redesigned space will open the doors for our students to go anywhere their imagination takes them. A library is a safe place for our learners.”
The additional campuses that will receive library upgrades will be announced in the weeks to come.
