Contest offers HISD students a chance to have their artwork displayed on city trucks

How does the fourth largest city in America manage recycling for more than 2 million residents? Creatively!

In partnership with the City of Houston, HISD presents the 2023 Truck Art Contest. Students are invited to tell the story of how recycling impacts Houston with innovative works of art centered around the theme “I Recycle for Houston.”

Student artwork should answer the question: Why is recycling important to you and the City of Houston? This is your opportunity to express yourself, help promote conservation, and win prizes.

Semi-finalist works will be featured in an online gallery, and the pieces that receive the most votes in each category (grades K-1, grades 3-5, grades 6-8, grades 9-12, and Special Education) will be enlarged and displayed on the sides of City of Houston Solid Waste Management Department recycling trucks.

Additionally, all winners will receive a framed copy of their artwork and a certificate at an awards ceremony.

The deadline for entry is Feb. 28, 2023. To enter, submit an entry form and your artwork (in PDF and landscape format only) here. Only one entry is allowed per student. Contest participants must provide their name and method of contact, such as email or phone number, to be eligible to win.

All finalists will be displayed online and open to public voting. The winners will be announced at the city’s Solid Waste Management Earth Day event on April 22.
