The Orange Show’s 29th annual Art Car Parade will be rolling through downtown Houston on Saturday, April 9, and almost a dozen of the mobile artworks on display will be the work of HISD students.
Two of the campus-based art cars this year will feature an owl theme. The Arabic Immersion Magnet School (AIMS) and Lovett ES both have the owl as their mascot, and their parade entries will be the first and third for their campuses, respectively.
The AIMS art car began its life as a 1989 Honda Accord. It will have a paper maché owl perched on its roof and be covered in real bird feathers.
“We were trying to figure out a way to really integrate the students’ work,” explained Alicia Kahn, an AIMS parent who donated that school’s art car and is collaborating with teacher Eden Bass on it. “So everyone has written his or her name in Arabic on a sticker, and those will be attached to the hood. They are all so into it.”
The Lovett ES art car, meanwhile, started out as a 2000 Chevrolet Astrovan. It is called “OWL-ways in the Artistic FRAME of Mind,” and will be decorated with repeating photo- and eyeglass-frame designs, based on the Pythagorean theorem.
“Building art cars has provided students with the opportunity to witness firsthand how science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) are ingrained in every facet of their life, both at school and in their community,” said Lovett ES art teacher Rickey Polidore Jr.
In an odd coincidence, three HISD teachers working on art cars this year have the same last name. Anna Bass is at Davis HS, Eden Bass is at AIMS, and Rebecca Bass is at Reagan HS. None are related.
A list of all participating HISD schools, including the names of their art cars, is below:
* Arabic Immersion Magnet School: “AIMS Owl”
* Black MS: “The Beastie Croonie-Kerploppus-Yalapapus”
* Davis HS: “The Art and Pride of the North Side”
* Forest Brook MS: “Forest Brook Middle School Bulldog Express”
* Garden Oaks Montessori: “GO Eagles!”
* Hamilton MS: “Hamilton Middle School Art Scooter”
* Herod ES: “Car-Huly”
* Hogg MS: “Razorback Pride”
* Liberty HS: “LHS Art Bikes”
* Lovett ES: “OWL-ways in the ARTISTIC FRAME of mind”
* Reagan HS: “Bohemian Rhapsody”
The free parade officially starts at 2 p.m., but cars begin lining up hours before that. Spectators can find a spot to watch anywhere along the way, but be sure to take note of the new parade route, which accommodates ongoing construction in the area.
