Over the next few months, HISD’s Advanced Academics Department will be hosting multiple parent information sessions on Advanced Placement courses.

The fall parent information session will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 14 at the Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center (4400 W. 18th St., 77092).

HISD offers students the chance to earn college credit while still in middle and high school by taking advantage of AP courses. Last year, HISD students took 28,236 AP exams, which resulted in more than $9 million in college savings for students and their families.  

All HISD high schools offer AP courses, and all HISD middle schools offer pre-AP courses designed to prepare students for success in AP courses. Both AP and pre-AP courses utilize a differentiated curriculum by modifying the complexity of the general school program, which results in honors credits on students’ transcripts.

At these sessions, AP specialists, AP teachers, and former AP students will be on hand to answer your questions, including:

• What is an AP course?
• Which AP courses should I take?
• What are the benefits of taking AP courses?
• What can I expect on an AP exam?
• What is AP potential?

This session is intended for parents of students in grades 8 to 11. Students are not required but strongly encouraged to attend. Please note that child care will not be available.
