Construction on the new Madison High School has now reached the halfway point — a significant milestone for the building project, which is part of HISD’s voter-approved 2012 Bond Program.
Exterior wall installation is nearly finished, and window and roof installation are underway. Brick work has begun on the southeast corner of the building, and fencing is now up along the perimeter of the school’s west parking lot.
Crews also are framing interior walls, installing utilities and flooring, and finishing concrete walls in the auto shop, as well as in locker rooms and restrooms.
“To see the progress of our new campus is exciting for our entire school community,” Madison Interim Principal Vernitra Shivers said. “Our original home has done us well, but we can’t deny that we are eagerly waiting to explore learning in our new school.”
Madison is among 40 schools being renovated or rebuilt as part of the 2012 Bond Program. The $94 million project calls for a new two-story school that will span 265,000 square feet and accommodate up to 2,100 students.
The school will be built facing West Orem Drive and will feature a two-story foyer that will double as a dining commons and large gathering space, while also providing plenty of natural light.
The school entrance will be flanked by three, two-story academic wings to the east and performing arts and community spaces to the west. A new gym, athletics area, and competition swimming pool will be located to the northeast. Watch Madison HS construction in real-time
Construction is slated for completion in the first quarter of 2019. Once the new school has been built and teachers and students have moved in, crews will begin demolition of the old school to make way for new athletic fields.
Bond construction is underway at roughly two dozen campuses. Half of all projects are finished and open to students. Once all work is finished, HISD will boast of one of the most modern portfolios of urban high schools in the country.
