Eastwood Academy is set to open a new two-story library wing this August as crews put the finishing touches on the second and final phase of the school’s expansion and renovation project.
Installation of exterior masonry and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems have been completed, and window installation is set to wrap up this week. Crews are in the process of hanging sheetrock inside the addition, which will be followed by internal inspections and installation of internal fixtures and finishes.
“We love the new wing, and look forward to the finished product,” Eastwood Principal Brandi Lira said. “We value literacy, so having a new library is something we are so excited to occupy.”
The $10.9 million project, which includes the construction of two wings and renovations to the existing building, is part of HISD’s voter-approved 2012 Bond Program.
The project’s first phase included renovations to the existing building and construction of the administrative wing, which opened in January. The administrative wing houses the facility’s main entrance, a student dining and multipurpose area, career and technical education classrooms, an athletics facility, and a large covered patio.
Phase two of construction, which will be completed in August, includes the second wing that features a two-story library expansion, additional classroom and flex spaces, and an enclosed walkway that will connect to the administrative wing.
Eastwood is among 40 HISD campuses, including 29 high schools, being renovated or rebuilt as part of the 2012 Bond Program. More than half of all projects are now finished and open to students, and that number is expected to grow to 80 percent by the end of the year. Once all work is completed, HISD will boast of one of the most modern portfolios of urban high schools in the country.
