HISD students from across the district will gather to show off their reading comprehension skills next week during the annual Name that Book competition finals. 

Coordinated by the HISD Department of Library Services and sponsored by professional services network KPMG, the contest serves to acquaint HISD students with classic literature, as well as contemporary award-winning books, representing a variety of genres. 

To prepare, students are challenged to read 30 or more age-appropriate books from an approved list over a period of several months, then compete on teams to see who can correctly identify the largest number of titles, based on quotes read aloud. Teams with the highest number of correct titles are deemed the winners—but the truth is that every child benefits by participating. 

The 2020 competition has been underway since last month and will conclude next week at Hattie Mae White (4400 W. 18th St, 77092). The elementary school finals will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, March 11. The middle school finals will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Thursday, March 12.
