Superintendent Millard House in collaboration with HISD community partner Group 1 Automotive selected Deandre Cooper from Burrus Elementary School as February’s Teacher of the Month.

“It is important that we recognize our teachers and the excellent work they do to ensure our students graduate as global leaders,” said House.

Cooper is a fourth-grade math teacher and the head baseball coach and varsity offensive football coordinator at Wheatley High School. Before beginning his educational career, he was an undrafted free agent for the Detroit Lions.

“When I was done, I came straight home, and I started working as a teacher assistant,” said Cooper. “I worked my way up. I got certified. It’s been up from there.”

Hard work and dedication are what Cooper hopes to instill in his students and athletes.

“He embraces challenges head on and pursues growth to become a better person, teacher, and coach, said House. “He strongly believes that coaching improves students’ performance both on and off the field and applies this philosophy to his teaching career.”

Cooper’s commitment to his students goes beyond academics and sports. In his free time, he gives his students haircuts.

“I’m not doing it for any recognition,” said Cooper. “I’m doing it for the kids.”
