Sharpstown HS student Scorpia Taban started the 2013–2014 school year on Monday missing some crucial school supplies. But now, thanks to a generous donation by Chase, the freshman is equipped with all she needs for a successful year. “This is great, because this morning I didn’t have a backpack,” Taban said. “This really helps me out, and I am very grateful.”
Taban and all freshmen on the Apollo 20 campus received new backpacks filled with school supplies, while students in grades 10-12 received pens, highlighters, spiral notebooks, binders, and more. The donation was made possible through a partnership between Chase and World Vision, an organization dedicated to working with children, families, and communities to overcome poverty and injustice.
“When schools, communities, and the private sector come together, wonderful things can happen for our kids,” said Sharpstown Principal Rob Gasparello. “We are so appreciative of how Chase has stepped up to provide needed school supplies to support Sharpstown High School students on their successful journey to college or the career of their choice.”
Sharpstown HS was selected to receive the donation because of their exemplary work under the Apollo 20 program, which empowers students to achieve academic success, graduate from high school, and go on to college.

“As the lead corporate donor of Apollo 20, we are pleased by the results achieved by the hard-working leadership team and students at Sharpstown High School,” said Vice President of Corporate Responsibility for Chase Carolyn Watson. “By providing school supplies to the students, we aim to equip them with the tools needed to succeed in school and affirm their hopes for the future. We recognize that today’s students are tomorrow’s workforce.”
Located in southwest Houston, Sharpstown HS serves mostly economically disadvantaged students, many of whom are working either full- or part-time jobs and come from single-parent households. The generous donation will save each student more than $20 and ensure that they have the necessary supplies to start the new school year out right.
