Students at Grady Middle School saw their new construction site go vertical today and marked the occasion by adding their signatures to a steel beam that will be used in the building of a 21st century addition to their campus.

Engineering students at Booker T. Washington High School cut straws into triangles and fastened them with tape to build a two-foot bridge that could hold a little extra weight.

“We need to build a sturdy platform that can withhold everything,” said student Nakiyah Scott while working with her teammate Monday on a bridge-building challenge that helped kick off a summer-long design team internship program at Washington.

Project Advisory Teams for Davis High School and Dowling Middle School looked for ways to make their facilities better with collaborative and transparent student-centered designs that provide safe and engaging learning environments.

Both groups participated in a two-day design charrette Monday and Tuesday with the schools’ architects to discuss pros and cons of the existing facilities and sites and to share design ideas for facilities that will move academic and social cultures into the 21st century.

In 21st Century Learning Spaces, It’s OK to Write on the Walls

Imagine a school where students can write and do Google searches on the walls of their classroom.

“How wonderful would it be for kids to have access to this kind of technology on their classroom wall?” said Furr High School Principal Bertie Simmons. “You can write on it. You can search the Internet with it. It’s just a really neat and innovative way to teach a class.”

Some classroom walls in HISD’s newest campuses may be getting an upgrade with modular magnetic glass walls created by DIRTT (Doing It Right This Time) Environmental Solutions. The company, based in Calgary, Alberta, manufactures the walls, which are attracting attention as schools embrace 21st century learning environments.
