Lee High School stakeholders sign steel beam to be used in construction of new building

On the last day of school, Lee High School students, staff and community members had the opportunity to sign one of the final steel beams to be erected in the construction of their new school.

The school, recently renamed Wisdom High School by the HISD Board of Education, is being rebuilt as part of HISD’s voter-approved, 2012 Bond Program. It is slated to receive a new $73.8 million facility to accommodate 1,700 to 1,900 students.

“The beam signing is an awesome experience for the kids. They’ll remember it forever,” said HISD Trustee Harvin Moore, who represents the school. “This is going to be an amazing campus when it’s finished, and I’m extremely pleased with the progress.”

New Worthing High School addition nears completion

Worthing High School’s new classroom wing is in the final stages of completion and will open to students for the start of the upcoming school year.

Recently, Worthing Principal Duane Clark led a group of district and community representatives through the new two-story building for a first-hand look at the new facility, which is Phase 1 of a three-phase construction plan.

Delmar Fieldhouse construction nearing finish line

For employees and visitors at Houston Independent School District’s Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center, watching the new Delmar Fieldhouse take shape over the last several months has been a site to see.

The 55-year-old athletic complex was demolished in March 2014 to make room for a $35.2 million facility that will be part of the new Delmar-Tusa Athletic Complex. Part of the bond program, the new three-story, 139,000-square-foot facility will serve as a multipurpose facility for the district.

Since construction began, construction crews have been working nonstop completing the installation of underground electrical and plumbing lines, steel beam erection and wall construction.

“We’ve received permanent power to the facility, so that would be considered a major milestone,” said Claude Yoas, Senior Project Manager with Rice & Gardner Consultants, who were hired to provide project management services for the project.

Some building features for the fieldhouse include a basketball and volleyball arena, modern locker and training rooms, and ample athletic storage for the complex’s existing stadium and ball fields.

Despite recent severe weather in Houston, Yoas says construction is still moving forward quickly and is visible.

“The rain hurt us just a little bit, but obviously it would be a delay for any work coming out of the ground,” said Yoas.

The athletic complex is scheduled to be finished this summer and open in time to host fall athletic events.

As most of HISD and the City of Houston had a couple of unexpected days off this week because of rain and flooding, construction crews at the new Mark White Elementary School were on the job. With just 124 days until the start of the 2016-2017 school year, the workers know that each day is critical to ensuring that the school is ready in time to welcome students in August.

“It’s definitely a challenge because we are up against a hard deadline, but we have a good team in place working to make it happen,” said Brian Alling, HISD’s project manager of the Mark White Elementary project. “Both the contractor and architect deserve a lot of credit.”

Anticipation is growing as Furr High School construction makes progress

Construction on the new building for Furr High School is set to be complete just 12 short months from now and open to students for the start of the 2017-2018 school year, project manager Michael Scott confirmed at the school’s quarterly Project Advisory Team meeting last week.

“I’m really pleased with the progress that’s been made in the first quarter,” Scott said. “Despite a couple of rain delays, we’re on schedule and we expect to stay that way.”

Pilgrim Academy community gets more information on planned addition

Pilgrim Academy held the second of three community meetings to inform stakeholders about plans to build a new addition for the school. About 50 students and parents attended the event, heard a presentation from the project architect, and had the opportunity to ask questions.

“I’m very pleased with the turnout,” said Diana Castillo, principal of the K-8 school. “It’s a beautiful design, and I’m excited about the new gym, all the natural light, and a longer parent drive.”

Booker T. Washington High School celebrated a big milestone Tuesday morning with a festive groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of construction on a new $51.7 million campus.

More than 100 parents, students, staff, alumni, and community members attended the event and were joined by HISD Trustee Rhonda Skillern-Jones, State Sen. John Whitmire and Houston City Councilwoman Karla Cisneros.

Architect Christian Sheridan had a simple strategy for making sure he remembered what’s important while designing the new $29.5 million Parker Elementary.

He kept a list of more than two dozen must-haves for the new campus, authored by Parker students two years ago during a special workshop hosted by his firm, Brave Architecture, to gather input on everything from paint colors to windows.

On Saturday, in front of nearly 400 people who turned out to celebrate the groundbreaking of the new school, Sheridan’s two young daughters presented the list, matted and framed, to Parker Principal Lori Frodine as a reminder that the new school reflects the needs of the people who will use it.

The site of the new campus for Mickey Leland Young Men’s College Preparatory Academy is teeming with activity these days as construction crews are hard at work and making great progress on the school’s new $42.4 million building.

The new 139,000 square-foot-building, located at 1701 Gregg St. on the site of the former Wheatley/E.O. Smith building in Houston’s historic Fifth Ward, is being built as part of HISD’s current bond program and will accommodate 900 to 1,000 students. Continue reading →
