Astros Foundation and Oxy celebrate HISD students with school supply giveaway party

Fifth graders at Dogan Elementary had some surprise visitors on Friday, Sept. 6, when representatives from Occidental Petroleum (Oxy) and the Astros Foundation came to help celebrate the start of the school year and donate books and school supplies. Astros mascot Orbit delighted the students with games and dancing to music provided by a DJ.

Oxy and the Astros Foundation partnered to donate 30,000 school supply items, collected by Oxy employees, to five elementary schools and one middle school campus in Denver Harbor and greater Fifth Ward, as well as two campuses in HISD’s South Division.

Dyad classes provide dynamic education opportunities for HISD students

With the installation of the New Education System (NES) at 85 HISD campuses came the introduction of an innovative method for introducing K-8 students to all new subjects and activities that they may never experience otherwise: Dyad classes.

Furr High School hosts ‘Civility in the Park’

Students from Furr High School recently held Civility in the Park, an event to celebrate the new spirit of community that exists in their corner of the east side. The area that was once plagued with gang violence and crime has been transformed in recent yaers thanks to dedicated citizens.

Civility in the Park featured musical performances, face painting, dancing and food. See photos from the free event below.
