All pre-K through Grade 12 parents and caregivers are invited to attend a live walkthrough of HISD’s new SchoolFinder tool and provide feedback. SchoolFinder is expected to launch in Summer 2022, and the insight from HISD families is valuable ahead of implementation.

HISD Family and Community Engagement (FACE) Department is teaming up with DePelchin Children’s Center to offer a series of three parenting workshops promoting better emotional health for children and families. These workshops will be available in English on Tuesdays, and in Spanish on Thursdays.

The HISD Family and Community Engagement Department recently welcomed parent leaders from across the district to the Spring Parent Organization Expo.
Attendees gathered virtually on May 11 to learn about resources and tools to support their work with their respective parent organization groups, such as recruitment best practices, fundraising ideas, transition to a new school year, and more. In addition, the audience got to hear from guest speakers: Brenna Pilcher from the well-known Get Movin’ fundraising organization, Lisa Holbrook from Texas PTA, and Rolando Martinez, PTO treasurer for Cornelius Elementary School. The FACE department also presented valuable information for parent organizations to prepare for the summer months.

Making sure that parents feel welcomed and valued at their children’s schools is a key component of HISD’s Family Friendly Schools program, and that’s why the district’s Family and Community Engagement (FACE) Department recently recognized four campuses for their successful implementation of that program.
Leaders issue call-to-action for parents: Stay involved in education
In many ways, parents act as their children’s first teachers, and local leaders want that influence to continue even after young people start school.
Representatives from HISD, Children at Risk, Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation, Early Matters, and Collaborative for Children joined forces during a press conference at Cunningham Elementary School on Sept. 3 to promote that message and encourage parents to make the most of the resources available to them.
Trustee Wanda Adams to host District IX community meeting May 7
HISD Board of Education member Wanda Adams, who represents District IX, will be hosting a community meeting to discuss STAAR and promotion requirements from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 7, 2015, at Hines-Caldwell Elementary School (5515 West Orem 77085).
The meeting will feature a presentation on the STAAR exam, followed by a panel discussion, and a question and answer session. Special Assistant to the Superintendent Dan Gohl and Director of District Testing Julia Amponsah-Glider will lead the presentation and panel.
“I want all the parents in District IX to understand what their child needs to do in order to be successful in their educational pursuits, which includes understanding the STAAR test, and promotion standards,” said Trustee Adams.

Hispanic Parent Summit connects families with the resources they need most
“My child wants to be the president of the Unites States of America. How can I help her?”
That was just one of the many questions asked this past Saturday at the Hispanic Parent Summit held at Anderson Elementary School. The summit connected parents from schools all over District IX to representatives from HISD’s Literacy, College and Career Readiness, and Multilingual departments, as well as Houston Community College, University of Houston, Catholic Charities, Houston Public Library, and many more.

Hispanic Parent Summit to offer free workshops and resources for families
HISD District IX Board Trustee Wanda Adams has partnered with the Family Learning Academy to host the District IX Hispanic Parent Summit from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 7, at Anderson Elementary School (5727 Ludington 77035). The free event will connect families with resources that support student success.
The event will feature panels, workshops, and a community resource fair with information for parents on topics such as helping English as a Second Language (ESL) students at home, developing young children’s literacy, getting involved in the school community, and paying for college. Raul Peimbert, Emmy award-winning Univision news anchor, will provide the keynote address, and HISD Trustee Juliet Stipeche will facilitate a panel on HISD resources. Continue reading
