HISD sophomore combats food insecurity with nonprofit food delivery service

Layla Lee, a sophomore at Young Women’s College Preparatory Academy, is only fifteen years old, but she is already on a mission to change the world around her for the better.

Lee founded and runs a nonprofit organization called Community Cuisine, a project devised to combat food insecurity in her community. Inspired by a school visit from the Pangea Network, an organization devoted to empowering women and youth, Lee applied for their Young Women’s Leadership Challenge (YWLC), a program that encourages young people to start their own community service projects.

HISD launches 2024 Souper Bowl of Caring

Team HISD, in collaboration with the HISD Foundation, is calling on the HISD community to participate in the 2024 Souper Bowl of Caring, a national, youth-led food drive to fight food insecurity.  

Souper Bowl of Caring is going on now, and collections will be accepted through Friday, Feb. 9. Donations will help to stock HISD Souper Pantries, and campuses, staff, students, and organizations can participate by hosting individual food drive events or donating funds directly to the HISD Foundation.

HISD partners with H-E-B to distribute holiday meals for annual Feast of Sharing

HISD is committed to engaging with and contributing to the communities in which our students live. Food insecurity is a problem that plagues many HISD students and their families, and community relationships like that of HISD and H-E-B provide HISD students with resources they might not have access to.
