Michelle Dean has been selected as the new principal of Frank Black Middle School. Dean has 30 years of experience in education with the last 20 years in HISD.

Five schools represent HISD at Texas History Day Competition
Students from five schools represented the Houston Independent School District at the Texas History Day Competition on April 24.
Students from Baylor College of Medicine Biotech Academy at Rusk Middle School, Black Middle School, Carnegie Vanguard High School, Mandarin Immersion Magnet School, and Young Women’s College Preparatory Academy attended the competition.

Five HISD schools won prizes in Saturday’s 29th annual Art Car Parade in downtown Houston, with district-created student art cars snagging two of the four “first-place” winning categories in overall competition.
The Reagan High School Art Car Club, led by teacher Rebecca Bass, won first place with “Bohemian Rhapsody,” and the Lovett Elementary Visual Arts Program, with teacher Rickey Polidore Jr., won first place with “ ‘OWL’ways in the ARTISTIC FRAME of Mind.” Both schools received a grand trophy and $1,500.

The 2015 winners of the African American National Spelling Bee Championships visited the Texas State Capitol on May 12, 2015, to be honored for their accomplishments. Two of the three champion spellers were HISD students.
