HISD to double extra-duty pay for teachers providing academic tutorials
To recognize the importance of eliminating pandemic-related learning loss, the HISD is doubling extra-duty pay for teachers providing academic tutorials for students.
Effective the week of Nov. 1, 2021, the extra-duty pay for teachers providing academic tutorials will increase from $25 to $50 per hour. The extra-duty pay rate for non-tutorial tasks will remain $25 per hour.

HISD announced its policy that this school year, healthy meals will be offered every school day to all students at no cost. Typically, a student’s household must meet income eligibility requirements to qualify for free or reduced-price meals.

The fall semester is well underway in HISD, and it is the district’s commitment to ensure students make it to and from school safely each day. In recognition of National School Bus Safety Week from Oct. 18-22, HISD recognizes the importance of school bus safety and thanks all bus drivers who dedicate themselves to the safe transport of our students. The national program “Be Safe – Know the Danger Zone” is designed to promote safety and serve as a reminder that we can all do our part to ensure students are safe in and around a school bus.

For dreamers, it isn’t just about the hope of attaining citizenship but their dreams for a better education. The process of post-secondary education begins in high school, but for many, it isn’t an easy process. With a little help, however, their dreams can be achieved.
College Readiness and Multilingual will be hosting a virtual Dream Summit Senior Workshop from 2:00 to 2:45 p.m. on Oct. 20 (sign up here). The workshop aims to assist students with applying for both college admission and financial aid.

Fourteen HISD students were named to Mayor Sylvester Turner’s 2021-2022 Mayor’s Youth Council (MYC).
In total, 17 students from the Houston area were selected out of more than 100 applicants after an application and interview process conducted by a selection committee. Students will learn about city government, share issues of concern with city officials, and gain civic leadership skills through community service activities.

While many students aspire to be a famous YouTuber one day, Challenge Early College High School senior Maanav Gupta is already living the dream.
Gupta’s “Maanav’s Sports Talk” YouTube program doesn’t look like it would be out of place on any primetime sports TV program. Gupta’s program has the feel of a professional show. Recently he interviewed ESPN alum Rich Eisen, and then he was able to score an in-person interview with Astros all-star Jose Altuve.

Jaquell Bonner from Wheatley High School and Jibril Rose from Kashmere High School will be competing all year in 50 Cent’s G-Unity Business Lab program, but before then, the two will square off on the football field, as Wheatley will host Kashmere at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, for its 2021 homecoming game.
