Editor’s note: This is the second in a monthly series of profiles on minority or women-owned companies that do business with HISD. The district’s minimum M/WBE goal levels are 20 percent for all levels of purchasing and construction and 25 percent for professional services. In the 2007 bond program, that commitment reached nearly 34 percent. In the 2012 program, the contracts awarded to date reflect a nearly 51 percent M/WBE commitment.

Board of Education Approves 11 More Contracts for Work Related to 2012 Bond
Selected projects include five more schools and athletic facility upgrades
May 9, 2013 – The HISD Board of Education authorized the district to negotiate design contracts with six firms on selected 2012 bond projects, including two of the district’s renowned specialty high schools – DeBakey High School for the Health Professions and the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts.
New Committee Looks to Boost HISD’s Supplier Diversity Initiatives
HISD’s Supplier Diversity Advisory Committee got its second look Friday at proposed changes that would build on the success of the district’s program for minority and women-owned enterprises.
The committee, launched in December, is moving forward with a plan to hold firms more accountable in meeting the district’s M/WBE goals with a new scoring system designed to encourage outreach and participation. Continue reading
New committee to focus on HISD’s supplier diversity initiatives
The Houston Independent School District held the inaugural meeting of its new Advisory Committee for Supplier Diversity earlier this week to build on the ongoing success of its program for minority and women-owned business enterprises.
The new committee gathered on Monday, Dec. 10, as the district moves forward with its 2012 bond program to repair, replace or build 40 schools. The goal of the committee is to provide input into how the district can improve M/WBE outreach efforts and accountability.
The district’s M/WBE program has already seen a record level of success with M/WBE participation in the 2007 bond program at 33 percent. As the 2012 bond program unfolds, HISD wants to build on that progress.

HISD holds networking event for architecture and engineering community
The Houston Independent School District is hosting a networking event for subcontractors interested in providing services to architecture and engineering companies, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., on Nov. 28 at Carnegie Vanguard High School.
The gathering will give participants the opportunity to discuss their qualifications should they seek to do business with the district as part of its 2012 bond program.
HISD seeking suppliers as diverse as the Houston community
The 2012 bond will create thousands of jobs over the next six to eight years as the Houston Independent School District embarks on a $1.89 billion program to repair or replace 38 schools, improve middle school restrooms and provide district-wide upgrades in technology, security, and athletic facilities.
