HISD recruiting teachers at hiring events in Florida

A team from the Houston Independent School District will travel to Florida this month to recruit and interview teachers for positions in critical shortage areas.

The district is looking for elementary bilingual education teachers who are fluent in both English and Spanish, as well as secondary math, science, and English/Language Arts teachers. Also needed are special education teachers with experience in autism education and deaf education at all levels.

Interviews/Job Fairs will be held in both Orlando and Miami. Candidates must pre-register and bring their teaching certificates, college transcripts, and/or a copy of their bachelor’s degree.

“This effort targets experienced teachers, which directly benefits our students” Senior Manager of Teacher Recruitment and Selection Juan Santos said. “We’ve seen great success with similar recruiting trips in North Carolina and Georgia. The teachers moved to Houston and thrived in the classroom and in the community. We believe these veteran Florida teachers will experience the same success here in Houston.”

With 287 schools, more than 214,000 students, and nearly 30,000 employees, HISD is the largest district in Texas and the seventh largest in the nation.

The district offers a competitive starting salary for teachers of $51,500 and full benefits.  HISD also offers bonuses for high-performing teachers, as well as retention bonuses for teachers at our harder to staff schools.

The team will host hiring events in the Miami area on Dec. 7 and Orlando on Dec. 8 and 9.  They hope to interview more than 100 people at each event.

All candidates must be highly proficient in English writing, reading, speaking, and listening.  Candidates who pass the interview process will be offered letters of intent on the spot.
