Construction at Young Women’s College Preparatory Academy is now 85 percent complete, with first- and second-floor renovations finished and work on third-floor classrooms well underway.
Demolition on the third floor is nearing completion. Ductwork and plumbing have been installed and light fixture replacement and roof installation are in process. In addition, auditorium renovations, including installation of new lighting, ceiling, carpeting, and HVAC system are all underway.
“The space is phenomenal,” YWCPA Principal Dr. April Williams said. “It’s a nice feeling to know that construction will be completed this summer.”
The work is part of a $31.1 million project, which calls for general renovations to the campus, as well as a partial replacement of the building. Once complete, the school — part of HISD’s voter-approved 2012 Bond Program — will accommodate between 900 and 1,000 students.
Erected in 1925, the original, three-story, stately brick building is an historic presence in Houston’s Third Ward and is among HISD’s oldest school buildings. Project plans call for the preservation of historically significant building features, while also increasing learning spaces and adding modern science and technology labs.
Crews have completed renovations to first- and second-floor classrooms, administrative offices, and performing arts areas, including a dance studio, band hall, and choir room. Other highlights include cafeteria and kitchen renovations, enclosure of the school’s outdoor atrium, and a new building addition that houses the gymnasium, locker rooms, science and robotics labs, and learning commons.
Construction is slated for completion during the third quarter of 2018.
YWCPA is among 40 schools being renovated or rebuilt as part of the 2012 Bond Program. Half of all projects are now finished and open to students. Once all work is finished, HISD will boast of one of the most modern portfolios of urban high schools in the country.
